An Unformed Backbone: Reflections After the 2025 Curatorial Academy International Exchange Program
In 2025, C-LAB, National Center for Art Research, Japan, and the National Culture and Arts Foundation jointly initiated the “2025 Curatorial Academy International Exchange Program,” recruiting 5 emerging Taiwanese professionals in curatorial and arts administration to conduct a return exchange visit to Japan. Over the course of a ten-day program, participants visited 14 institutions and engaged in in-depth exchanges with more than 40 local curators. In addition, NCAR organized a sharing session titled “Exploring the Taiwanese Art Scene,” inviting participating partners to present and engage in dialogue.

In the past half-century of cultural development in Taiwan, “Indigenous peoples” have often been the object of desire for mainstream ethnic groups. “Desire” in this case is of course intertwined with complex scenarios (and sentiments?): it involves the mechanisms of governance of the modern state, and at the minimum, it seeps into the intimate structures of emotion and desire, with various enigmatic twists.
