All About the Paiwan Name "Vuday"

Artist Vuday felt caught between two cultures and value systems. In the past, he searched for his indigenous Paiwan heritage and believed that his Paiwan name could connect him to his family and identity. Nevertheless, he found out from his mother, who is not even Paiwan, that he was named “Vuday” (meaning “corn”) by his grandmother since he loved to eat corn when he was little. The beautiful imagination he had of his culture embedded in his name vanished like a mirage. After hunting with the men of his community several times and producing woven rattan crafts, he realized that the name he had been seeking was a kind of representation. Through his practice and experience, he has felt his soul becoming connected to his community.
