An Exhibition Regarding Hong Kong: IP Yuk-yiu─Notes before the…

During the Taiwan International Documentary Festival (TIDF), Hong Kong artist IP Yuk-yiu was invited to create an exhibition on the first floor of C-LAB’s West i-CENTER. Facing changes in his level of freedom, IP uses an experimental video game, writing machine, and video art to subtly present the political context of Hong Kong. To Call a Horse a Deer is an experimental video game about language, a reflection and critique of reality, and a type of simulation training for discerning truth. False Words consists of an automatic writing machine that continuously recombines and reiterates the essay “I Have No Enemies” written by the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate LIU Xiaobo, creating an imaginary dialogue. Recording over a five-year period from the Umbrella Movement in 2014 to the summer of 2019, Notes before the Wind preserves fragmentary scenes of Hong Kong before the outbreak of large-scale social protests. These three works reflect modern-day Hong Kong and, like water penetrating stone, the unfinished reality of its people.
